The Revolution Starts Locally:
Reclaiming Power for Thriving Communities
By Paul Deslauriers
Do you feel like the critical decisions shaping your life are made in distant halls of power, far beyond your influence? It's a growing frustration, a sense of powerlessness against forces that seem too big to tackle. But what if the true levers of change, the most impactful points of power, are actually right in your own backyard?
State, federal, and even global governance draw their power from the base, your local community. The laws that most profoundly impact your daily existence – your housing, your local environment, your economy, the distribution of public funds, and even your ability to unplug from systems that don't serve you – are in your county or municipal council chambers. This is where local grassroots civic action isn't just impactful, it's revolutionary.
The Power Source: Your Community, Your Control
Local laws and their enforcement provide a foundational protective shield, fostering self-sufficiency, supporting local economies, and even enabling the exploration of local currencies. This is where community engagement truly shines, offering a pathway to self-determination and resilience.
The most direct, strategic, and least disruptive path to altering corrupt systems lies in local grassroots civic engagement. The ultimate trigger point? Electing a majority of local legislators who genuinely serve the people and the environment. This approach provides desperately needed systemic change that minimizes disruption to local infrastructure and daily lives.
Imagine a community where:

-
You have greater health-freedom and self-sufficiency.
-
Local currencies strengthen your economy and counteract the impending digital gulag.
-
Community development and empowerment are priorities.
-
You have a greater ability to respectfully withdraw from upper layers of governance that no longer align with the US Constitution.
-
Where you have a protective shield from tyranny.
This isn't a pipe dream; it's within your grasp through proper local representation and engaged community action.
The Tool: Nonconnected Political Action Committees (PACs)

"Sounds great," you might think, "but how do we actually achieve this?" One incredibly effective, yet often misunderstood, tool is the Nonconnected Political Action Committee (PAC).
Unlike corporate, party-affiliated PACs, or Super PACs, Nonconnected PACs operate independently, without direct affiliation to any candidate, political party, or established sponsor. They are established by individuals, like you, or groups – essentially, they are the political arm for a grassroots movement of transformation. They allow communities to pool resources and strategically support candidates who truly represent their interests.
Proof in Action: The Maui Pono Network (MPN)
This strategy isn't hypothetical; it's being executed successfully right now. These grassroots PACs are functioning throughout the US. I am a founder and director of such a PAC, the Maui Pono Network (MPN), formed in 2018.
MPN serves as an example of what is possible when community members unite and use the PAC structure strategically. In just over just two election cycles we helped to elect a majority to the Maui County Council, and greatly aided the passage of 19 Charter Amendments.
This wasn't just minor tweaking; it was a fundamental rewiring of Maui County's constitution for genuine self-sufficiency. Their achievements of these local laws include:
-
Crucially, regaining community control of water access – a vital resource previously controlled by a Canadian Pension Fund.
-
Developing local food production and distribution initiatives and support for organic farmers.
-
Addressing critical environmental and cultural concerns.
-
Reducing cronyism and nepotism by fundamentally altering the system.
-
Dedicating affordable housing resourced through a new department
The Maui Pono Network's journey, with its ongoing challenges and triumphs, offers a powerful blueprint for what's possible when communities take back their power. Witness their ongoing efforts and be inspired: Visit MauiPonoNetwork.org
